If you’re looking for a destination that feels like it’s straight out of a storybook, let me introduce you to the Sintra Mountains, or Serra de Sintra- lush paradise filled with ancient myths, royal retreats, and jaw-dropping views. The place where history, nature, and magic all meet, and it’s an absolute must if you’re planning a trip to Portugal.

Back in the day, this area was sacred to the Celts, who believed it was home to their Moon goddess. Fast forward a few centuries, and it became the playground of Portuguese royalty who left behind incredible palaces, gardens, and castles. Now its a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also has a cooler, mistier climate than the surrounding areas, giving it this enchanted, otherworldly vibe. You’ll see plants and trees here that you won’t find anywhere else in Portugal.

What to Visit

There are so many jaw-dropping spots to explore in Sintra.

Start with the Pena Palace- located high on the mountains, its one of the most colorful and whimsical palaces you’ll ever see with the greatest views of the landscape below.

Not far from there is the Moorish Castle, which dates back to the 8th century. The castle walls are perfect for a scenic walk, especially if you love a bit of history mixed with breathtaking views.

Another must-see is Quinta da Regaleira. This place is like stepping into a dream with its gothic architecture, enchanting gardens, and that famous Initiation Well- a spiral staircase that feels like it’s straight out of a secret society tale. You’ll definitely want your camera for this one.

And if you’ve got time, check out Monserrate Palace, a lesser-known gem with gorgeous botanical gardens.

Hiking in Sintra

If you love exploring on foot, the Sintra Mountains are hiking heaven.

There are plenty of trails for all levels, so whether you’re a casual walker or a seasoned hiker, you’re covered. One of the most popular routes is the hike up to the Cruz Alta viewpoint, the highest point in the mountains. With some unreal views!

Another favorite is the trail from Sintra town to Cabo da Roca. This one is a bit of a challenge, but you’ll be rewarded with incredible coastal views and the sense of standing at the edge of the continent. Remember to wear comfy shoes and pack some water!

Why You Should Go

Sintra really is a place to experience. It’s the kind of spot that stays with you long after you’ve left- it has a way of capturing your heart. It’s perfect for a day trip from Lisbon, but honestly, you could spend a few days here and not run out of things to do.

So, what do you think? Did it make on your travel list yet? If you’ve been before, I’d love to hear your favorite spots. And if you’re planning to go, let me know so I can help you make the most of it — trust me, it’s worth it!
